Day One on the Plot: The Journey Begins

Unlocking Possibilities: Our First Day on the Allotment

There are certain moments in life that just feel like the start of something special — and for us, getting the keys to our very own allotment plot was one of those moments. The excitement was real, the anticipation even more so and as we stood at the gate with keys in hand, it felt like we were unlocking more than just a plot of land — we were unlocking a whole new adventure.

A Plot Close to Home

One of the things that made this plot perfect was its location — just a short walk from home. That in itself felt like a dream come true. No long drives or complicated logistics, just the freedom to pop over whenever we had a spare hour (or needed a break from everything else). Being so close gives us the chance to really make the most of it and we couldn’t wait to get started.

Unexpected Treasures: A Greenhouse and Shed

As we explored the plot for the first time, we couldn’t believe our luck — we’d inherited a greenhouse and a shed! That instantly took the pressure off, giving us a ready-made space for starting seeds, potting plants and storing tools. Both needed a bit of love and tidying, but they were solid and full of potential. It felt like we had a proper base camp for our allotment adventures.

Taking Stock: The Walk Around

We spent that first visit just soaking it all in, walking slowly around the plot, taking stock of what we had and imagining what we could create. Some parts were overgrown, others already had defined beds and there were signs of past growing efforts — a few old canes, netting and hints of forgotten crops.

We didn’t dive straight into work — instead, we just took our time, dreamed a little, and planned. There was a sense of possibility in the air — from where the greenhouse could be put to best use, to where we might grow our first rows of veg, or set up a compost heap. The ideas were endless and we left that first visit feeling inspired, if a little daunted by the work ahead.

A Blank Canvas Full of Potential

Yes, there’s work to be done — clearing, digging, planning — but that’s part of the joy. The plot may not have been perfect when we got the keys, but in a way, that made it even better. It’s a blank canvas and we can’t wait to shape it, season by season, into a space that reflects our love of gardening, growing and being outdoors.

This is just the beginning of our allotment journey — and we’re excited to bring it to life, one step at a time.
