Camellia japonica ‘Bob Hope’ – A Showstopper in Crimson

There are few garden plants that command attention in quite the same way as Camellia japonica ‘Bob Hope’. With its rich, velvety red blooms and striking golden stamens, this variety has become one of my personal favourites. It’s bold, elegant, and brings a splash of deep colour just when the garden needs it most.

Why I Love It

What draws me to ‘Bob Hope’ time and again is its intensely saturated colour. The petals are a deep crimson, almost velvety in texture, and they form in a semi-double shape that’s both graceful and eye-catching. In low light or early spring sunshine, the colour seems to glow, making it a standout feature against the glossy green foliage.

Origins & Characteristics

Named after the famous entertainer Bob Hope, this cultivar is a hybrid of Camellia japonica, bred for both its floral impact and robust nature. It typically grows as a medium-sized, evergreen shrub, reaching up to 2–3 metres tall if left unpruned.

  • Flowering season: Late winter to early spring
  • Colour: Deep red with prominent yellow stamens
  • Foliage: Glossy, dark green leaves year-round
  • Habit: Upright and bushy, ideal for borders or feature planting

Where & How to Grow

‘Bob Hope’ thrives best in a sheltered, partially shaded position where it’s protected from cold winds and morning frosts. Like all camellias, it prefers acidic, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil – so if you’re gardening on chalk or clay, it might be worth planting it in a container with ericaceous compost.

Top Tips:

  • Avoid spots where morning sun can hit frost-covered buds.
  • Mulch annually with leaf mould or pine bark to keep the roots cool.
  • Feed in spring with an ericaceous feed to encourage flowering and lush growth.

Companion Plants

Pair it with ferns, hellebores, snowdrops, or spring-flowering bulbs for a woodland-style planting scheme that comes alive early in the year. It also looks fantastic as a specimen shrub in a pot, near a doorway or garden path where you can admire the blooms up close.

Final Thoughts

For me, Camellia ‘Bob Hope’ is more than just a plant – it’s a reliable performer and a highlight of the late winter garden. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just getting started, this camellia deserves a place in your garden if you’re after bold colour, elegant structure, and year-round interest.
