🎃 Our Bold Pumpkin Gamble – And It Paid Off!
This year on the allotment, we decided to try something a bit different — we planted our pumpkins out early, in May, taking a chance on the weather. With fingers crossed for no late frosts, we watched the forecast like hawks… and this time, luck was on our side!
Fast forward to early July and our brave gamble is paying off beautifully.
🍃 A Head Start Means Early Colour
There’s something truly magical about pumpkins — they seem to go from tiny green marbles to full-sized orange globes almost overnight. One of our pumpkins has already turned from a fresh green to a rich, warm orange.
It’s incredible how fast they ripen once they get going — just last week it was a shy green fruit hiding under the leaves, and now it’s a bright burst of autumn colour in the middle of summer.

👨👩👦👦 Watering & Feeding – A Family Routine
Keeping pumpkins healthy takes a bit of effort, but it’s become a lovely routine for us as a family. We’ve been giving them a deep drink every couple of days, especially in this warm spell.
Once a week, we mix up some tomato feed to give them an extra boost — pumpkins love a good feed when they’re working hard to swell those fruits.
The best bit? The kids absolutely love helping with the watering. Little watering cans in little hands make light work of a big job, and they’re so proud to see the pumpkins getting bigger each week.

🌱 New Growth & Future Pumpkins
Our early starters aren’t the only stars — the new plants we popped in later are racing to catch up. They’re spreading out strong vines, sending out bright yellow flowers, and we can already see more baby pumpkins forming.
If all goes well, we’ll have a steady stream of pumpkins ready to harvest later this summer and into autumn — just in time for lantern carving and hearty soups.
✨ Little Moments, Big Memories
One of the best things about growing pumpkins isn’t just the harvest — it’s all the little moments along the way. Checking under the leaves to see what’s growing, spotting the first hint of orange, seeing the kids’ faces light up when they find a new pumpkin hiding in the vines… these moments are what make the allotment so special.
