Nic

Co-Founder & Director

I began gardening in my early twenties, not from a background steeped in horticulture, but with something just as valuable—an upbringing shaped by creativity. My mother, a naturally gifted artist, taught me to see the world through the lens of design, structure, colour and composition. That influence has guided me throughout my career, from shaping hedges with the precision of a spirit level to crafting accessible, beautiful outdoor spaces.

Over the last 20 years, my love for nature and the outdoors has only deepened. What began as a practical job evolved into a passion for creating spaces that feel meaningful and welcoming. I’ve gained extensive experience in hedge cutting, even helping to train others—one of whom has become an excellent hedge cutter in his own right.

My journey into tree work saw me complete my Level 1 tree felling course and a climbing course, though health issues prevented me from taking the final exam. Those challenges shifted my focus and I now work primarily on the ground as a key part of the team—advising on pruning shape, guiding structure and ensuring the safety of team members and the public during tree operations.

Hard landscaping became another area where I could combine creativity with craftsmanship. I’ve worked across a wide range of projects, from building raised beds and dry stone walls — a craft I have practised for 16 years and hold a DSW Level 1 qualification — to laying everything from block paving to crazy paving.

I enjoy constructing pergolas, arches and steps of varying depths and widths, always with a focus on accessibility and detail. Water features are a particular love of mine, especially ornamental ponds and aquatic planting where beauty meets tranquility.

Throughout my career, accessibility has remained at the heart of what I do. As someone with personal experience of disability and having worked extensively with individuals who are visually impaired or have mobility or respiratory issues, I believe that gardens should be spaces everyone can enjoy. That belief shapes everything—from layout to material choices, from safety considerations to aesthetic decisions.

While I’m not a specialist in plant science, I often contribute to planting schemes within the team—offering advice on colour palettes and structural combinations. I’m also certified in spraying for weed management, helping ensure gardens are not only beautiful but healthy and manageable.

Outside of work, my love for plants continues through art. I often use them as inspiration for creative pieces, some of which can be found in our shop.

Matt and I started Garden Hues in 2024, driven by a shared vision to create outdoor spaces that truly make a difference. I’m proud to be part of a skilled and thoughtful team and I’m excited to see how Garden Hues can continue to bring joy, beauty and accessibility to the people and places we serve.
