Matt

Co-Founder & Director

I’ve always had a passion for gardening and the outdoors. My journey began as a child, helping my parents on their allotment and spending weekends gardening at a couple of houses during my early teens. This hands-on experience sparked a lifelong love for horticulture.

One day on my way home from school, I noticed a sign that said “Plants for Sale” outside someone’s garden. I wandered in and met an elderly gentleman who took me under his wing. He taught me how to prick out seedlings, pot on young plants and propagate—a skillset that really stuck with me and deepened my passion for growing.

During school, I also did my work experience at a garden centre. I enjoyed it so much that I continued working there on weekends after the placement ended, learning a huge amount along the way. After leaving school, I trained and qualified as a plumber, but my heart led me back to horticulture. I went on to work at an inner-city farm, a charity supporting people with disabilities and learning difficulties. There, we made compost for the local and wider community and I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to such meaningful work.

As Kay and Nic’s apprentice, I started my part-time self-employed gardening role alongside the composting job. After a couple of years, I took the leap to go full-time into gardening for both private and commercial clients. Since then, I’ve completed my RHS Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, become a certified tree surgeon, and I’m currently studying arboriculture in more depth.

I began my gardening career in 2011 and continue to grow both professionally and personally. I’ve joined local horticultural groups and am a proud member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture. I’m a strong believer in lifelong learning and am always working to expand my knowledge in both horticulture and arboriculture.

In 2024, Nic and I created Garden Hues and I’m truly excited for what the future holds. Both as individuals and as a business, we’re committed to growing beyond limits.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you
